Letters Sent (a series), 1878-1894.

Press copies of letter sent by the officer in charge and by a few other officials of the War Records Office. In addition to copies of letters sent, the earlier volumes include endorsements and compilations of data, such as lists of papers received and lists of military units in various organizations. The volume for the period July 16, 1890 to January 30, 1891 is missing and it is probable that there was originally a volume dated prior to 1878 which is now missing.

By an act of Congress approved June 23, 1874, $15,000 was appropriated "to enable the Secretary of War to begin the publication of the official records of the war of the rebellion, both of the Union and Confederate armies," and the work was assigned to clerks detailed from the Offices of the Secretary of War and The Adjutant General.
